I'm glad to continue on with the "Flora and Fauna" themed characters and the coming weeks will see larger scale developed paintings including concept work for my Blossom Butterflies and some more personal abstracted interpretations of sonic landscapes.

So I was thrown some quick freelance from a designer at work who thought she didn't have the time to just pump little paintings out after getting home at the end of the day. It's small, thirty dollar an hour work but right up my alley. I'd say it just gives me an excuse to listen to Buckethead and imagine pigs playing guitar with him. Luckily this guy works out of Cambridge so I can easily meet up with him and chat about the work if need be. He organizes fun and entertaining events across the north shore and typically needs these spot Illustrations completed right away so he provides excellent challenges.

Here is a recent tattoo job I completed for a cool friend up in Salem, NH, in memory of her mother who was fond of Orchids. We both found out how useful Paypal is while going about the process too, yay for online money transfers :)

These paintings reflect some personal interpretations of crescendo's of various musical groups like Jakob, and Collapse Under The Empire to name a couple. The horizontal one was started last December and has since taken a back seat. This will change.

First one is a dud, but I expect a couple of them this week. It's satisfying to flex my color theory knowledge a bit and test out some new areas of exploration for where Illustrations will come next. More scans to come Saturday for ideas I have in development. Let me know thoughts if you feel inclined to share them, always very open to criticism of any kind.

Fall Update

Needing to photograph more portfolio work has become so difficult without proper equipment so I'm leaving out a couple of proud, finished pieces for now and revealing some works:

A couple character concepts, and revisiting a piece(originally from Vermont) that I never chose to tackle while in school.

I've been transitioning departments at Rue into the Imaging Specialists area which has kept me happily going with experience, and I continue to toss my work out into the market with many reply's for work...just nothing satisfyingly profitable. The interview at Maxim Toys(think Lincoln Logs and magnetic connected wood trains when you were little)went well even though I wasn't offered the spot due to lack of a years worth of packaging experience that the second candidate happened to have over me. I received an email less then 5 days after meeting with the Art Director and VP stating these details, including tons of positive feedback regarding my ethics, conceptual aesthetics, and portfolio of traditional and digital art.

From Roderick the Art Director, I was told that paying my dues is still important no matter how strong or versatile a portfolio is and that an extra year of time can actually matter throughout the entire learning experience. He told me a story that came as a surprised in the end of the email too; Roderick's first Illustration positions for hire within large companies were primarily from his sketchbook ideas that evolved throughout numerous pages. Thing's like notes, quotes, readings, simple forms or even color studies and plain gibberish give light to a quickly evolving sketch process which builds fresh and engaging ideas.

Rod was pretty insightful with this feedback and it's awesome how he took the time to write back in as much detail as he had. I was grateful to say the least and somewhat surprised as well.

A sketchbook (or sketch process) is truly the backbone of any communication artists content and I know I can carry this experience with me far into the future.

oh, and guys....Keep your sketchbooks at your side when out on a walk :)

This is album cover art for a good friend on lead guitar from Berkley. Compared to most digital matte finishers out there it isn't anything of to grand a scale, but when it gets fully rendered out of it's fuzzy state I'm sure it will appear as if cut from the same clothe. With more permissions I can put up the finished product this week.

The blue jays progress will be up this evening when the blogger uploading device decides not to go apesh!t on me here at RCI. All 3 are so close to their final stage so I will make a frame shop trip down the street today to get the measurements done. April 24th is the deadline so I feel fine about the amount of time it will take to come up with business cards, prints, etc. I also have another summer show coming up at Peter Coe's Gallery www.petercoesgallery.com , where my older senior work will be on display for sale in Barnstable where business is blooming during springs/summer. There will also be another Children's Book commission going on this summer that I just received from another person looking to self publish. The job will range from 3000+ dollars and another contract for royalties, as it will be a series of book's with 30 or more pages. thanks to all of my friends who have given feedback on the paintings!

A series near it's end

Feet still need rendering, and backgrounds need cleaning up but these are the forms being taken from the birds. The amount of time these require is daunting to say the least but well worth the stress. Through recent discovery, they are becoming easier with the application of an environment suitable to each birds aesthetic appeal. A goal I had been so afraid of for the longest time was bringing a fluid and expressive background into my images that, still through careful planning, can project an ethereal type of mood.

All 3 renderings will be posted next week(basically done) and will reflect a cohesive melding of both strict attention of detail and an environment that is strikingly full of life.

UNIPLAY

So this evening I was paid the kill fee for the sketch progress of the iphone game application which I was thrilled about, although afterward Andre and his company UNIPLAY changed their mind for something less detailed. Initially, Andre said he loved the graphic and thought it was finished to his specs, but the content didn't pass by his higher-up's as well. As Many of you know, less detailed is a challenge to overcome; one that sometimes means I don't meet the criteria well enough and unfortunately redoing the project is what must be done. Simply another learning experience for a young Illustrator along the great road so this is what I leave you with. It may not be the most unique in terms of minimal cartooning and stylizing, but it fit the modern look of today's urban motifs they were searching for. Just to much detail.

In other news, the front cover of the Children's Book made it into Tate Publishing's 2010 National Illustration Competition so it can get some decent exposure there amongst the ranks thankfully. I am proud to be amongst other hard working image-makers such as Corinne Reid and Erin Miller back at Montserrat, huge congrats to them! 2 spots ahead on me, well done!

2 more weeks will mark the near finishes for all 3 new bird renderings and an older, more expressive painting to pop up and surprise many. Stay tuned folks...

First of all, I would like all fellow friends to acknowledge Danielle Smith for winning 500$ and having a piece of hers chosen for the 2010 Society of Illustrators student catalog. The image is a wonderful mock-up of what Beetle Juice 2!! might have been like. I myself am ( jealous) and overjoyed for her to be apart of such a prestigious competition.

Second..here is finally some progress for the upcoming bird show located at Elissa Della-pianna's Gallery in North Wenham this May. Have no fear, the blue jay will NOT be nearly that saturated.

First of all, yes Derrick this is you. Second....I'll leave this alone for a while. There will be some cartoons coming up next for my g/f's family including my own for the holiday. I encourage everyone to give gifts and good feelings throughout the year and not just on a designated date of the year. The new job at Rue Lala has been a blessing upon my humanity. It pays well and opens up my doors to new things. I'll throw the a picture of the kids book on here for good measure also.

Some of them still have their issues, but again fairly minor. The dragons on the doors were intentionally done as one being larger than the other, including the flame wrapped around the door handle. Lastly, there are sizing issues on the top page in the "people to house" sizing ratio, even if it is small. Pretty boring houses I guess.

It's high time that I return to some more personal experimentation and begin preparing my work haul for Elissa Della-Piana's bird show next March which will run till late August next summer at the Gallery Della-Piana where I will be grouped with 8-10 big-name artists. Hopefully I won't be the youngest one with work on the wall. Throughout the remainder of the Fall, there will be many more interesting updates of things to come.

Finally, 2 highlights from the Childrens book I've been laboring over during the summer and early fall. It feels relieving to know that my name will be printed on the cover of a book, even if it is for someone else's self published story. The project paid 800 dollars for 7 full color Illustrations displaying the closest thing to any type of "style" I've produced other than my natural science work. As shown above, the story is titled "The Witches that Saved the Dogs", a jam-packed story about 2 girls named Hortense and Esmerelda who have their puppies(Waggy-Tail, and Princess) kidnapped by an evil witch. Throughout the story, Hortense and Esmerelda must discover their own magical powers in order to save their beloved puppies.
One of the issues I had after reading over the text was that there were plenty more scenes that could have been executed, but would have cost the authors more than the 800 dollars they had available for me.

Another issue was the formatting I was confined to for each painting. No landscape at all, only portrait format and 8.5' x 11' inches. Because of these limitations , most compositional elements rely on warped views and tend to follow the same sizing in terms of hierarchy in content and where I put the most detail. These aspects give a majority of the pages a sense of consistency, but also a slight hint of forced feeling. The remainder of the successful ones are coming!

One my most favorite pencil drawings, loved the mystery of bigfoot since I was about 10 and would always find myself wondering through the Vermont woods to find it. The pose should be familiar to most with a small alteration from the movie where the figure is slightly more hunched over and twisting around in motion. I chose to make it almost about to duck back into the brush and add grittier texture to its fur. Bigfoot's eyes are its best aspect with the face left in near shadow.

An original characer design done in watercolor for sci/fi Illustration junior year. I was working at morphing a favorite animal of mine(rat), and thought of a way I could encorporate an organic and earthbound element(roots). A great concept for a creature possible of folklore in the wilderness.

I made this poster for last semesters Typography class. It was my favorite assignment( I love posters/propaganda), and I had fun making it look like a Russian Constructivist piece too, big fan of the softer more nuetral color and fist. Alain Blunt was a badass instructor, and I learned so much more about hierarchy of text as well as use of negative space to enhance composition. Typography is just as tedious if not more anal-retentive then Illustration in my opinion, and I feel a greater comfotabillity utilizing it along with images now.

Football Helmet Pinball Machine

A painting done in Gouache with a graphic technique. This was based on an editorial article about peewee football coaches putting wireless transmitters inside the kids helmets during games in order to monitor where they were taking hits frequently and resulting in concusions. Thought the Helmet Pinball Machine was humerous and took a stab at it. I think this was the third time ive used gouache maybe. It's an odd media that creates extremely luscious hues, however it has a tendencie to dry a slightly darker shade then mixed normally.

Here are a couple more editorials from last Fall and summer. The Spider was derived from an article about the various ways to keep spiders as Pets for Boys Magazine and I thought the concept was fairly universal and straight forward for its general audiance. It was always a childhood dream of mine to keep one as a pet but never got the chance so this was the turnout. Who doesn't love pirates??? I like that I used a more nuetral color pallete for this pianting as it maintains a more comicbook type appearance.

As for the snow man at the bottom, I came up with this concept from an article about making kids lunches cool and fun during the summer. This concept is also fairly universal, the only nit picky thing for both Mark Hoffman and I was the positioning of the kids heads which could have been a alterred slightly but for the most part it was pretty successful. both are watercolor, pen and ink.

A random fart for fun and helping a my friend Ben with his color theory/renderring abillity for a few hours over winter vacation. first still life ive done in about a year, and it felt amazing to just piece the objects together. I messed up a tad with the halo around the lemon, but otherwise I enjoyed the time that was spent. Drapery, glass, and metal are some of the most difficult things to paint so it was quite a challenge.

Grey Squirrel and color study

A Grey Squirrel, from photo referance obviously..done between the end of July and the beginning of september of last year before classes began. Probably spent about 20-30 hours total on it and there were a few screw ups in between as usual. This Faux finishing technique with acrylic allows for intense renderring but also the opportunity to distance myself away from the actual photo and become more expressive in many ways just by simply pulling out values. My next logical step is being selective of which parts to keep of the color sketch for the next renderings. Sorry for the headless and footless owl...it will be completed shortly.

Tate Publishing Competition

Although this was a failed concept for an editorial assignment for last semesters Senior Thesis class, It luckily found a place in the Tate Publishing Illustration Competition which came to me as a massive shock. Some of the levels are alterred in photoshop and a touch-up on the nose, but other than that I felt great about this painting. Dry brushing the ink on felt great since I hadn't used the technique since Illustration 3, but it didn't give me problems. I have this thing for glowing veins..

sketchbook keepers

these are done inside various sketchbooks throughout the years. Some are better renderred than others, some are loose...either way, they are some of my favorites. starting from the bottom-a 20 minute drawing of my stepfathers coworker done on new years eve 2008 I think. Above is a man I met over this past summer named John. He liked to do timed drawings so I set a clock for 20 minutes on my cell phone and we went at it, getting to know him was wonderful and I still draw once in a while with him. The last above that is a portrait page with Jenna Barbieri, Logan Faerber, and Kate something? either way..I screwed her up, wasn't able to do her justice. I was happy with Jennas likeness though. expect more of these pages soon I have them lying around on my computer.
